A trip we intended purely as a tourist visit, ended up as an impromptu performance!
Riel House National Historic Site is located in the St. Vital area in Winnipeg, Manitoba. When Louis Riel (1844-1885) was hanged for high treason, he was returned to it one last time — his body lay in state in the living room for two days in December 1885.
Today it is a gathering place to remember and celebrate the culture he fought to protect. We had arrived just in time for the final event of the season — the Annual Riel Corn Roast — and they made room for us on their performance schedule. We were proud to dance for the crowd in attendance, but also took the opportunity to explore the house and grounds, and enjoy the roast corn and fresh bannock.
