We were pleased to receive this invitation from Indspire to perform and teach Métis jigging at their national gathering of Indigenous high school students from across Canada!
The two-day event allowed students and educators to access panel discussions, performances, workshops, resources, and tradeshow content to expose Indigenous youth to career possibilities.
We were invited to perform Métis and First Nations dance, then teach anyone from the audience down on the rink of Canadian Tire Centre—home of the Ottawa Senators!
After performing the Red River Jig, Maple Sugar, and the Orange Blossom Special, we invited the audience to join us. We demonstrated some basic jigging steps and taught the students some simple routines which they performed to traditional fiddle music.
We hope to be invited back someday! It was a wonderful day with enthusiastic youth and we were gratified at the number who took the time to meet, talk, and take pictures with us! It was also a treat to work alongside Notorious Cree, Sebastian Gaskin, and Alyssa Wapanatâhk, as well as our Y4YCanada collaborator and friend Akina Ohlman.
