We were honoured to attend the 2025 National Indigenous Sports Gala hosted by the Aboriginal Sport Circle. The gala brought together athletes, leaders, Elders, and community members from across Turtle Island to celebrate 30 years of Indigenous excellence in sport. Being part of that energy felt powerful and welcoming.
We were invited to share a short presentation on the connection between dance and culture. We spoke about how jigging brings us closer to our Métis identity, how movement carries memory, and how dancing is a form of empowerment. Dance has always been a way for us to stay close to who we are, and it was meaningful to talk about that in a room full of people who understand how culture and sport fit together.
After the presentation, we performed the Red River Jig and our own original Paddle Dance. It was exciting to hear the audience respond and to feel everyone’s encouragement. We were grateful for the chance to share our culture on such an important stage, and we left feeling inspired and connected.
